Read previewWhen I reflect on my teenage years, I remember the peer pressure, the pimples, and the sting of social awkwardness. Now, as a parent to a teenage girl, I often worry she feels the same way. I wonder if she feels like we can't connect and that I couldn't possibly relate to what she's going through. Before the trip, I asked my daughter what she thinks is appropriate phone usage while on a family vacation and we set guidelines together. It helped us better connect as mother and daughter.

Both are owned by Herschend Family Entertainment, though Silver Dollar City opened first in 1960. I've visited theme parks all over the world and this now ranks as one of my favorites. There are also unique attractions at Silver Dollar City that I haven't experienced anywhere else — Grandfather's Mansion was one of my favorites. An Earthquake Startled the Northeast

A 4.8-magnitude earthquake sent tremors from Philadelphia to Boston this morning, rattling New York City skyscrapers and surprising many East Coasters. The earthquake struck at 10:23 a.m. Eastern, with an epicenter near Whitehouse Station, N.J. — about 40 miles west of New York City — according to the United States Geological Survey. It was the largest quake within 250 miles of Manhattan in more than 30 years, and the third largest since the data began in 1957. New Yorkers are more familiar with much smaller tremors, which usually go unnoticed in a city full of rumbles. The city is also filled with old brick buildings, and officials said they remained concerned about the aftereffects of the quake.

The 4.8-magnitude earthquake on the East Coast Friday came from ancient dormant faults. The East Coast, however, is located in the middle of a plate and doesn't experience much of that movement. NOAAInstead, East Coast quakes come from stress that builds up on those ancient fault lines. The glaciers heavily weighed down and compressed the northern part of the East Coast. Though that weight has been lifted for more than 10,000 years, the Earth's crust is still rising back to its former shape.

Catapulting off an aircraft carrier is a sharp, jarring experience even more intense than the landing, and I recently experienced this firsthand in a US Navy C-2 Greyhound. These movers are disproportionately higher-income, a new Bank of America report found. Las Vegas and Phoenix are the only Western cities Bank of America analyzed that had population increases compared to first quarter 2020. Housing costs are a major reason people are leaving West Coast cities for the Sunbelt. But many Sunbelt cities have more permissive land-use and zoning regulations than their coastal counterparts, meaning they're often better equipped to keep up with rising demand by building more homes. Both West Coast and Sunbelt cities that aggressively restrict housing construction will likely continue to face affordability crises.

In the mythology of the West, Los Angeles is equal parts grit and glamour. The reality isn’t far-off: Impossibly pink bougainvillea blooms feet away from gray highways choked with round-the-clock traffic. Perhaps unsurprisingly for a city that is, among many other things, a showbiz town, Los Angeles is defined by its imagery: the Hollywood sign, palm trees and beaches, of course, but also lowriders, Art Deco buildings and street vendors. For Angelenos themselves, those visuals can take the form of one’s personal aesthetic. Fashion Week, which runs from Wednesday through Sunday, The New York Times asked West Coasters for their ideas of the quintessential Los Angeles uniform.

It’s the latest example of how extreme weather, exacerbated by climate change, impacted major North American attractions this summer. Extreme heat in Florida also disrupted attendance at Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando this summer. Theme parks are building indoor rides and changing ticket policies to respond to brutal weather conditions. Golding has lowered his estimates for the theme park industry because of growing risks from extreme weather. SeaWorld warns in its annual report to investors that extreme weather events could cause it to “incur significant costs.”“The series of extreme weather events experienced in recent years presents an alarming trend,” SeaWorld said.

Television’s depictions of religion have often leaned either toward po-faced dogma or scouring atheism, but here is one that dares to split the difference. The eldest, Jesse, is a pompous hothead whose default response to any insult is light violence and who, despite his persona as a family man, has enjoyed the sort of hard-partying lifestyle that would make early-1970s Led Zeppelin blush. His sister, Judy, is a flamethrowing libertine with a staggeringly foul mouth and a tendency to transgress against her lovingly milquetoast husband. Like a staging of “King Lear” at a monster-truck rally, the show has a loneliness that undergirds its berserk energy. This is not the only fascinating vision of the church on HBO these days.

Parents and guardians often feel exhilarated by our children’s successes as much as we feel panicked and exhausted by their mistakes. We feel what they feel, and it’s a lot to go through, for them and for us. You need to experience “just the right amount” of setbacks to feel pain, learn from it, repair and become stronger. But there is something you can use to make sure that your child’s setbacks don’t become the headline of their childhood and, instead, become a launchpad for growth. Her latest book, “Eight Setbacks That Can Make a Child a Success,” is available at all major and indie booksellers.

Public pools are disappearing across America

Yet just as public pools become more important than ever, they’re disappearing from sight. Today, the city has five public pools for a population of around 640,000, ranking 89 out of the largest 100 cities in swimming pools per person, according to Trust for Public Land, an advocacy organization for public parks and land. Private pools, like these in Southern California, have replaced public pools in recent decades. When America built poolsWhile public pools are a rarer sight today, governments built enormous pools during the twentieth century. The feature, which goes off when a device is moved quickly, was likely set off by attendees dancing a little too hard.
